Partials and Dentures

A dentist's most keen objective is for patients to keep their teeth for as long as possible. It is undisputed that a person's quality of life is better if most teeth are preserved. Of course, today there are newer and more effective means to help patients maintain their oral health. However, there are times when a person's oral condition is such that few teeth may be available for chewing, or even that all teeth have been removed. There are many situations that can produce these unfortunate outcomes. When this is the case, it becomes necessary to make either full dentures or partial dentures.

These customized prostheses, which are removable, are designed to look as natural as possible and to help the patient chew effectively. They are made from reinforced acrylic resin, and may have a metal subframe made of vitallium, the same alloy used in artificial hips. Several visits for impressions and fittings are needed to complete the customization process. Depending on the number and strength of available teeth, and the health of the surrounding bone and gums, a design is custom-created for each individual patient. In most cases a natural look is achieved. With careful planning and design, a high level of comfort can be attained.

There is admittedly a learning curve that often accompanies getting used to partial or full dentures. However, we work closely with quality labs that we have used for many years to create the right fit and look for each patient. With proper care, these plates will last for many years. However, because of wear and tear, as well as changes in the mouth, adjustments and repairs are needed from time to time. The plates should be checked periodically by our office, and good home care is needed to keep the plates, and any remaining teeth, clean. Generally it is recommended that the plates be cleaned and soaked overnight for a fresher and cleaner fit, and to give the mouth and teeth a rest.

We strive to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime, but when that isn't possible, we can fit you with natural-looking, comfortable partial or full dentures to help you maintain your lifestyle and good health.
